2022 Basic Attachment Sampler Part 1

Welcome to the 221 basic attachment sampler project! I designed this to utilize the basic attachments and show the results off in a sampler that can be a wall hanging or a quilt.

Supplies needed are: 1 yard each of dark and light solid fabrics and of a complimentary patterned fabric. 5-7 buttons, a sheer fabric or a flat lace, a yard of cording, a roll of thin ribbon, thread, scissors or cutting tools, iron and ironing surface, batting and backing fabric.

For this block, we will use one of the six dark colored 13”x13” squares and a strip of light or patterned fabric cut or pieced to 5”x55”.

Featherweight Project - Cashmere Covered Pillows

Ever go through your closet and start to weed out the things that don't fit anymore, or are not things you wear much, or just need to get tossed? Sometimes those things are too good to toss and need a new purpose. I looked at some sorry looking pillows and stuffed them into the worn sweaters. Voila, the cashmere covered pillows started to come to life.

This is not a ground breaking discovery. There are many websites that show their way of making them. Here's the way I did mine.

I bought a couple 16" pillow forms. They fit nicely into the size sweaters I had to work with.

The first thing to do is turn the pillow inside out and line up the ruler along the side so you can cut off the sleeves. I was surprised at how easily the blade cut through the knitted fabric.

Hemming Silky Fabrics

One job that is tedious but becomes manageable with the right tool is sewing narrow hem seams on silky fabric.

Fortunately, the Foot Hemmer can help you sew a hem that you can be proud of!

I had a long evening dress with a lining that needed to be shortened 6 inches. Trimmed down to length, it was ready for hemming.

The lining was made of satin. It was a firmer fabric and fed through the Foot Hemmer very well.

Featherweight Project - Wired Ribbon

It's the most wonderful time of the year for our interior design side to kick into full swing! We have ideas and sometimes our supplies need some help. I love wired ribbon. From the first spool I bought, it is my preference for decorating. Today, I spotted the perfect ribbon for my project but it was not wired. Hmmm. I don't want to buy expensive wired ribbon when I already have this gorgeous ribbon! What can I do?

I've been one to tell people that if they can't find what they want in the shop, then they have to take charge and make it themselves. Generally, with some creative thinking, you can make what you want.

So I told myself that same advice.

I had the ribbon. I had very lightweight floral wire. So far so good.

Featherweight Project - Shirred Ornament

When we had class 8 on using the Gathering Foot, I wanted to use this technique on something special. Here's an idea I had for it - a shirred ornament!

The soft texture of the fabric gives an interesting contrast to the tree. And using a fabric with some shine is perfect for the holidays. See August 28th's class 4 if you need a refresher on Needles, Fabric, and Pressure Control.

Let's learn how to make this!

Featherweight Project - Evergreen Tree Card

Now that we have some skills with attachments under our belt, let's put them to use!
It's the perfect time to combine our sewing with card making! If you need any instruction for machine basics and posts on how to use the accessories, go to the Featherweight Skill Series tab on my blog, pamelynspostings.blogspot.com or at my website ThistleFireQuilts.com

I had these nice strips of green and gold cotton. Very evergreen-y. They were 2-1/2" x 32" but you can use ones that are longer and trim them to the length you want later.

The Ruffler - Oiling Points

Any time you have a part with gears and metal moving along metal, care is needed to keep things working well. Our Ruffler attachment is no exception.

Only put ONE DROP OF OIL in each spot. Over oiling will cause drips that will stain your fabric and that would look awful on your completed project. If you have trouble controlling the amount of oil coming out of your dispenser, dip a toothpick into the oil and set it on the spot where you want the drop if oil to go.

I oil it in six places to keep it (and me) working happy!
